I attended a vigil in her memory in Brighton, and it was absolutely heartbreaking. ![]() When I first heard the news I was absolutely shocked – but in a truly tragic way, there was a part of me that wasn’t even surprised. She was described as ‘fearless’ and ‘larger than life’ and her death had a huge effect on the trans community, myself included. I’ve seen myself that a distinct group of people cannot bring themselves to have compassion towards any trans person – even for a 16 year old girl whose life was brutally cut short in a public park.īrianna was who she was, and was loved and supported by her friends and family as the girl that she was. It’s just another example of how awfully trans people are treated in the UK – and that those advocating against inclusion have no dignity and respect for trans people, even as we mourn someone from our community. ![]() The fact that a mere mention of a trans girl in this context created such a visceral and angry reaction shows how far there is to go in making sure trans people are respected as who they are.
